10 Essential Self-care Tips

Admit it, sometimes it’s nearly impossible to put yourself first. Between kids, spouses, parents, friends, and the little daily tasks that fill up our lives, we let days go by before we realize we haven’t had even a second to call our own. This little fact right here is one of the greatest causes of stress and anxiety – when your life isn’t yours.

Reconnect to who you are through a few basic self-care practices that will reinvigorate your zest for life and charge those worn out batteries:

1. Splurge Once in a While
Learning to save money is an important skill that will serve you well in the long run. But after you’ve put some cash in the bank, bills have been paid, and your retirement account is looking nice and full, why not use the extra for something fun? It doesn’t have to be something monumental like a vacation or a new car. But what about a tub of gelato? Those pants you’ve been eyeing for months that fit just right? Or a yoga class you’ve never tried before? All of these little things add to the value of life in a way that wealth can’t.

2. Exercise
Your body is the most important thing you own; if you don’t take care of it, where are you going to live? Now, this doesn’t mean you have to do 50 push-ups and 100 crunches (unless you’re into that sort of thing). Find something you love, like swimming, tennis, yoga, or even just dancing around your house! Get your blood pumping, heart pounding, and always take time to appreciate what your body can do.

3. Eat Well
This one goes hand in hand with exercise and appreciating your body. Eating healthy isn’t just about caloric intake. More important than how much fuel you’re putting into your body is what kind of fuel you’re using. Loading up on sugary smoothies, refined carbs, and high-fat foods not only impact your physical health but your mental health too. How many of us feel happy-go-lucky when we’re bloated, crashing from a sugar high, or watching our cholesterol skyrocket? Stick to healthier options like fruits, veggies, and ancient grains to keep your spirits up and your blood-sugar down.

4. Get Off Social Media
Do you really care what your second cousin twice removed had for dinner last night? Is Kim Kardashian’s latest tweet going to add anything of significance to your life? Turn off your phone, unplug your laptop, and step away from the technology. You’ll never find time for yourself if you spend hours scrolling through the lives of others. Even if it’s just for a day, try to avoid all forms of social media. Get out there and live your own life!

5. Meditate
This just might be the ultimate self-care tip. Countless Zen masters, Buddhists, and even celebrities and CEOs have espoused the almost magical effect meditation can have on the mind. Not only does it improve concentration and lower stress, but it has also even been shown to slow aging! Throw out those anti-wrinkle creams in favor of 10 minutes of silent reflection.
